PAUL BRIL (1554 - 1626) Oil on canvas. In a magnificent carved, pierced and gilded 18th century frame. Size including frame: 51 x 65 in. (129.54 x 165.10 cm.) Provenance: NOTES: The present painting was completed at the very end of Bril’s career, by which time he had replaced the fantastical late mannerist landscapes redolent of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, for which he is best known, with the baroque classical landscape. Bril is credited with bringing the Arcadian landscape, that the artist Claude Lorrain went on to perfect, to Rome from Flanders.
